Cornubia Early Learning Centre Murals

Early Learning, redefined.

Some spaces are designed simply to function.

Others are designed to inspire curiosity, imagination and connection from the moment you walk through the door.

Cornubia Early Learning Centre became an opportunity to create something far beyond a collection of individual murals. Together with the visionary team at Paul Flynn Properties and ACP Builders, we created an immersive environment where art was woven into the experience of the building from the very beginning.

Inspired by local wildlife, native landscapes and the diverse community the centre serves, this series of bespoke murals transformed blank walls into a connected visual story designed to spark wonder in young minds.

More Than A Mural

What began as a discussion around a single mural concept gradually evolved into a series of connected spaces spanning both interior and exterior environments.

From the outset, the goal was never simply to decorate walls.

The vision was to create a cohesive experience that reflected the surrounding landscape while helping children feel curious, welcome and connected to their environment.

Rather than inserting artwork into a finished building, the art became part of the design conversation from the beginning. My innovative and open-minded client trusted me to create a concept design package that would drive the art direction and vision for the entire centre.

This integrated approach allowed every mural to contribute to a broader story that unfolded throughout the centre.

Creating a Sense of Place

Inspired by Cornubia's Natural Environment

The surrounding Daisy Hill forests became a major source of inspiration for the project.

Local wildlife, including the area's much-loved koalas, featured prominently throughout the artwork, helping create a meaningful connection between the children and the natural environment around them.

As part of the creative process, I spent time researching Koala food trees, observing native landscapes and studying the colours and textures found in Australian bushland.

One discovery that particularly influenced the artwork was the incredible colour palette hidden within gum trees. New growth revealed unexpected shades of peach, dusty pink, burgundy and blue-green, colours that became woven throughout the mural series.

Nothing inspires me more than real places, especially the places we leave our hearts.

The Transformation

Designing Spaces Children Can See Themselves In

The first hello matters.

One of the most important moments within the project became the feature entry wall, designed as a public welcome that celebrates the diversity of the Cornubia community.

Each hand-lettered "hello" reflects languages spoken by families within the centre, creating an immediate sense of belonging and inclusion.

As children and families move through the building, a connected visual story unfolds across multiple walls, celebrating local flora, fauna and community identity. The result is an environment that feels playful and imaginative while remaining thoughtful, sophisticated and deeply connected to place.

Why Integrated Art Matters

Designing Experiences, Not Decoration

For children, environments become part of how they learn, imagine and remember.

Thoughtful art has the power to shape how a place feels. It can transform walls into stories and buildings into experiences that people carry with them long after they leave.

Projects like Cornubia demonstrate what becomes possible when artwork is considered as part of the built environment before construction is complete.

Not as decoration or an afterthought, but as an integral part of creating a meaningful sense of place.

The Outcome

The completed project transformed Cornubia Early Learning Centre into a vibrant, story-led environment that supports learning, imagination and belonging.

By integrating art across multiple spaces, the project created a cohesive experience that celebrates local identity while helping children form lasting connections with their local environment and the place they call home.

The result is an early learning environment designed not only to function, but one that warmly welcomes children back every day and will be remembered long after they leave.
